Gifting paths and open spaces via a society membership subscription2 min read

Do you know someone who enjoys spending time in open spaces or exploring our amazing network of paths? Would you like to buy a gift in this pandemic year that shows how much we have all come to value our outdoors, now more than ever? Would you like to make an environmentally friendly and ethical choice for your outdoorsy friends and family?

Say ‘yes’ to open spaces and paths

The society is a small charity which receives no government funding. We work to conserve and promote access to the outdoors by seeking protection for paths and open spaces, so that everyone can enjoy them. That work may involve challenging white paper proposals or guiding a community action group so that it can object to a planning and development application. The charity has been active for over 150 years defending paths and precious green space no matter how large or small, and our campaigning works. As we embrace the current restrictions to our way of life to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, why not reflect how vital paths and open spaces have become to our well-being, in the presents you choose to give?

Here are some recent success stories showing how communities are reaping the benefit of our campaigning:

Blackburn group win support of borough council for new Asset of Community Value

Somerset Trust withdraws Swansea common land-swap for second time

Threat withdrawn to ancient road in South Downs National Park

Our charters for open spaces in England and in Wales were launched in response to the Covid-19 crisis and call on government, local authorities and the public to act together to ensure that as many people as possible can have access to good-quality green spaces within a short and easy walk of home.

We really value every one of our members as each provides the mandate for our voice to be heard so that we can keep paths and open spaces in the spotlight, where they belong. All members are kept up to date with our work and have access to support for protecting open spaces and public paths as well as a huge amount of expert knowledge and case study experience on our website and from our Open Space member magazine, social media and eZines.

From the safety of your home you can buy a society membership as a gift online from just £33 for a whole year’s subscription. Apply before 18 December to be confident that we can post out your gift in time for Christmas.
