Earlier this year, we were delighted when Havering Council formally agreed to adopt five new village greens which it had previously identified as much-needed sites across the borough.

This summer, the council is celebrating the new sites with a series of event and dedications over the coming weeks.

The first of these events, which local residents have helped to organise, took place on 13 July.

For any of our supporters local to Havering, upcoming events will take place as follows:

  • Saturday 20 July 2024, 11am, at Wennington Green, Wennington Village, Rainham
  • Sunday 28 July 2024, 10am, Land west of Taunton Road, Harold Hill
  • Sunday 11 August 2024, 1pm, The land at Gooshays, Harold Hill
  • Wednesday 14 August 2024, 12noon, Dover’s Corner, Land at New Zealand Way, Rainham

Said Councillor Graham Williamson, Cabinet Member for Development and Regeneration: ‘These much-loved green spaces are very important to us and will soon be formally dedicated as village greens. I very much look forward to celebrating this milestone over the summer.’

The five village greens will remain undeveloped, protecting them for future generations to enjoy.

Open Spaces Society case officer, Nicola Hodgson, said: ‘Any landowner can voluntarily register his or her land as a town or village green, without the need to gather evidence of use (2006 act s15(8)). Local councils should consider registering land which they own, to give local people rights of recreation and to protect it from development. The local council can also press developers voluntarily to register as TVG green space in a development as mitigation. Registration of green space will confer protection in perpetuity.’
