The Open Spaces Society has joined 17 other environmental groups in urging the candidates in the London Mayoral election to back ‘A more natural capital’.

Hampstead Heath, London

The manifesto calls for support for our Charter for Open Spaces, and the dedication of green spaces as town or village greens.

It advocates ten new district parks, and opposition to all development that would result in the loss of metropolitan open land and green belt.

It proposes the creation of six new, high-quality, green walking routes, and greener streets.

More generally, it urges the candidates to pledge that they will focus on four main themes to make London more natural: reducing pollution and waste; securing nature’s recovery, mitigating the climate crisis and increasing resilience to it, and improving everyone’s health and well-being.

We are pleased to be a member of this coalition and to have contributed our ideas to this manifesto.  We are hoping for positive responses from all the candidates, and that the new mayor will adopt our recommendations.

The mayoral election is on Thursday 6 May 2021.
