Are you passionate about the open spaces local to you? Would you like to help your community to protect them?

Could you be an Open Spaces Society local correspondent?

Are you passionate about the open spaces local to you? Would you like to help your community to protect them? Do you have a little time on your hands and the energy and enthusiasm to give back to your community? Why not become an Open Spaces Society local correspondent?

Local correspondents report and respond to planning applications that affect open spaces in their area. They are also a vital link in the communication between local organisations, members of the public, local authorities and landowners.

Most importantly, local correspondents are the first line of defence when it comes to protecting the public paths, village greens, commons and open spaces that people love.

What will you do as a local correspondent?

The skills and duties of all of our local correspondents are as varied and individual as they are, with no two areas the same. Responsibilities may include:

  • Objecting to planning applications which have an adverse effect on common land, open spaces, public paths and access to the countryside.
  • Receiving and responding to all proposals to alter the routes of public paths and lending their considerable local knowledge on applications for works on common land.
  • Attending public inquiries or hearings on public paths, commons and greens.
  • Reporting any unlawful encroachments or seemingly inappropriate use of commons and greens and reporting on public path problems.

Our local correspondents are there to support our members in standing up for the paths and open spaces that matter to them.
