Green light for Sevenoaks Greensand Commons Project, Kent

Support us from £3/month

We deal with almost 1000 cases a year assisting communities, groups and individuals in protecting their local spaces and paths in all parts of England and Wales. Can you help us by joining as a member?

We are delighted that Sevenoaks District Council, Kent Wildlife Trust and other partners have won a National Lottery grant of £483,600 for the Sevenoaks Greensand Commons heritage project in Kent.

The project, which we have supported from the start, aims to restore the commons as important open spaces with their fascinating history, abundance of wildlife and opportunities for public recreation and learning.

Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, the project will raise the profile of these special places.

Says our general secretary, Kate Ashbrook: ‘We consider it to be wonderful news that the National Lottery has agreed to support this important project.  The greensand commons are a glorious, unsung part of our heritage.  They are varied in their landscape and habitats; they provide splendid views and an abundance of historic remains with many stories to be told.  They are rich in flora and fauna, and are great places for local people and visitors to explore, and children to play.

‘Through the project, local communities will discover so much more about the environment and opportunities on their doorstep.  We are very excited about what the project will offer—which is why we have supported it from the start, and we congratulate all who have worked so hard to reach this important milestone.’

A project manager has been recruited, and more staff are to be appointed, with the project starting in the autumn.
