Our Common Landthe law and history of common land and village greens

Our Common Land: the law and history of commons and village greens was first published in 1971. This sixth edition, by Paul Clayden, has been thoroughly revised and updated to include, in particular, the important changes made by the Commons Act 2006.

This edition states the law at October 2006.

As the contents list (below) shows, the book puts the law into practice, and describes everyone’s rights and responsibilities on common land. It will be of benefit to local authorities, landowners, common-right holders, and the public who now has a right to walk on all the 1.3 million acres of common land in England and Wales. The book also has a substantial section dealing with village greens, which complements the society’s Getting Greens Registered.

Paul Clayden, a solicitor, was the society’s secretary from 1976 to 1984. He subsequently worked for the National Association of Local Councils and was its director from 1995 to 1998. He is now a freelance legal consultant and author. He is a vice-president of the Open Spaces Society.
