Jack's experience of countryside protection dates from the mid 1960s. 
He has been a member of OSS since 1971. 

He is vice-president of the Ramblers’ Association’s SYNED Area (chair 3 yrs, vice-chair 6 yrs, rights of way officer 25 yrs) chair of Sheffield Campaign for Access to Moorland, and honorary life member of Peak and Northern Footpath Society in recognition of his work for them over many years. 

Jack is a member of the executive committee of the Peak District and South Yorkshire branch of the Council for the Protection of Rural England 1984 to 2002 and branch chairman 1999-2002.  Has represented these organisations at many public inquiries. 

From 1976-86 he was co-opted to the former South Yorkshire County Council’s access and rights of way committee. 

He is a committee member of Hallamshire Historic Buildings Society, a member of National Trust, Compassion in World Farming and Chesterfield Canal Trust.
